But, we still have time to really enjoy our Home & Life!
Are you a Baby Boomer?
Have you retired or starting to think about retiring? Me too!
I bet you are going through all the mind games my husband and I have gone through and still do when each birthday comes around. We don’t think of ourselves as old… what happened? In our minds we believe we are still 35!
We love cranking the stereo (on the computer) to our favourite songs from The Eagles, Simon & Garfunkel, Queen, LED Zeplin etc and watching reruns of Fawlty Towers, Seinfeld and old movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, 50 Leagues under the Sea while eating popcorn we made in our microwave popper (instead of in a pot of oil on the stove)! We still crave SweeTarts, licorice ropes, Eatmore, Old Henry, Reese’s Pieces, coconut mounds or chewing Bazooka Gum! Ahhh life then was good!
It usually takes some ‘life event’ to make us stop and assess where we are in our life and what we really want to do and be ‘when we grow up’. Unfortunately, our body keeps telling us something different especially when we have to deal with health issues like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, depression & anxiety etc. This is when we begin to realize our own mortality and that time is ticking along way too fast!
It was my 50th birthday and all of a sudden my husband’s health took a bad turn and we didn’t know what we were dealing with. We were both scared and saw several doctors and alternate therapy health professionals to figure out what was going on. Because of his health and our uncertainty, we decided to be proactive.
We de-cluttered and refreshed our home as much as we could and then put it on the market to find a lower maintenance house in the city. The trouble was neither of us really wanted to move and/or ‘downsize’ our lifestyle but we knew it was important to find a smaller, newer home somewhere we could spend the next 10 or so years in and a condo was not an option for either of us!
I am a 35+ Year Interior Design Veteran that is a very process driven person so this time I created a fill-in ‘wants and needs’ list. We individually wrote down what we wanted in our next home. We compared notes and streamlined what we jointly wanted – a smaller, craftsman style, 3 bdrm, 3 bath house of high quality, low maintenance, high perceived valued house with unobstructed west (sunset) views of the ocean. Then we listed off our absolute “needs” – newer, low maintenance, private fenced yard for our furry family members.
